vin decoding help - and thoughts on MB diesel are appreciated

hello - stupid question, but I wonder if anyone can help me decipher the vin on an '83 MB 240D diesel I'm looking at. My darn carfax expired several weeks ago. I know that an old diesel is an old diesel - but any help is appreciated. I always thought they start "W123..."

THanks if anyone can help. I'm considering giving up my 244 to play around with a diesel and maybe biofuel. the W123 seems very similar to the red-block RWD volvos. Any thoughts on these cars in comparison to the 24 are welcome!
