engine options 1800 1971

Yeah, I've had bone stock B20E's eat up a BW35 lump in just a few months time on two occasions. Followed by M41 swaps, of course!

I'd say the simplest path to high HP fun in your 1800 would be through John Parker's products. I'd say for a budget of $6000 that you probably aren't going to get close to the monster stroker/supercharged 300 HP beast, but you are probably nicely in the ballpark of putting a supercharger and a modified head on top of a stock bottom end. Maybe 200 - 250 HP?

Good luck getting a BW35 to thrive in that sort of use.

Another option would be to buy a donor 200/700/900 Turbo Volvo and finesse the drivetrain into the 1800. Lots more fabrication, as opposed to the bolt in nature of John's go-fast parts.
