but in a word, yes, it sounds like your AMM is bad if it starts w/o it plugged in but won't with it attached. Do you have a turbo? If not, you should have a thermostat in the airbox that opens/closes a flapper valve. This t-stat goes bad and the airbox charge air will overheat and bake the AMM.
Never changed your airbox t-stat before? Probably the root cause of your AMM failure.
