Agree absolutely. 95% of carb / injection problems turn out to be ignition. Check the point gap -- as Shayne says, when the point are on the high part of the distributor cam, you should have .016" between them.
When the points are open and the ignition is on, you should have clearly measurable voltage at the condensor-points junction at the distributor (not necessarily 12V). With the points closed, you should have zero volts there. If either condition is not present, the coil cannot generate spark.
