Which method should I use to install my stereo?

I'll second the recommendation that you use a harness kit, and solder the wires on the harness kit to the wires on your new deck. You can do all that outside the car, and then just plug it in.
Alpine stuff is generally quite good--in fact, Alpine has made most of the Volvo radios for the past twenty years or so.
If you haven't replaced the speakers yet, do so next; the difference will amaze you.
