Don't know if it's true, but I've heard that the main reason the Dodge slant-6 was slanted was to make room for a very long manifold. Stylists weren't so concerned about low hood lines in those days.
I believe it is possible to tune a harmonic of the sonic pulse you speak of. On my performance B20, the guy who engineered it insisted on a total intake length of just under 17", measured from the tip of the velocity stack to the intake valve. He was quite specific about it, and gave me a hard time for coming up 3/4" short in the first configuration. Unfortunately, coming up with the extra length involved making several changes simultaneously, so I can't say how much of the improvement (which is noticeable) is due purely to the length.
I may or may not understand the theory of this someday...
