How does the speedometer sensor work? 700 1986

I am trying to figure out why both my speedometer and odometer quit at times, sometimes for less than a second, and sometimes a whole trip. Sometimes I'm able to get it to work again by flicking it. So, if I have the cluster out of the car, how can I test it? Does the speedometer work by varying the resisance drop at the sensor in the differential? Or is it done by pulses each time the wheels turn a signal is sent?

I wish I had a spare cluster to test the wiring with, but my spare is from a 83 760 and it has four more wires than mine and I can't get the speedo on it to work in my 86 740.

Thanks,
Nathan
