Usually the only place to find quality programing is on AM radio. All you get on FM is about 15 stations you can't tell the difference between.

Where else can you get news, sports, and traffic reports? At night, you can listen to stations from other parts of the country! If it weren't for AM radio, I couldn't listen to the Blazers play.

So you see, there is a point in having AM radio.
