Oil scraper ring question 200 1988

I have used the Grant rings before, and Hastings and others. You have to be very carefull with the Grant style three piece oil ring, or the engine will be a real smoker.

Install the expander (mesh) ring in the groove, and ensure the ends (sometimes have two colours of plastic or paint on the ends to identify them) are abutting each other, and do not overlap. Spiral a scaper ring (thin steel one) into place above the expander, with the gap of the scraper one inch to the left of the ends of the expander ring. Spiral the other scraper into place below the expander, with its gap one inch to the right of the ends of the expander ring. When positioned properly, the assembled three piece oil ring must be well proud of the piston surface, and be impossible to squeeze into the groove with just your fingers (unless you are a gorrila).

Position the gaps of the oil ring in line with the piston pin, the gap of the second compression ring in line with the other end of the piston pin, and the top ring in line with the oil ring gap. In other words, all rings 180 degree from the previous one. I know that many manufacturers go on about spacing at 120 degrees, and that's fine, but with the ring comressor being a fiddle for most people, keep them as far apart as possible. I have customer engines at over 100,000 miles and they still don't burn oil. In fact the rings tend to precess around the piston in service, and the gaps will pass each other as they do this. You just don't want all three lined up at any time.
