The cold start problems and the soot problem could be caused by a flooded float chamber, which again is caused by a punctured float. If this is your problem, you could have your carb serviced for less than the cost of a used carb of unknown condition. The Pierburg carb from the A-engine could be a possibility, but I would not expect it to be a direct fit on your existing intake, so I would also take the intake for the Pierburg. As I have not swapped intakes, I cannot guarantee that the A-intake will fit on the K-engine though.
From what I have heard, only a few minor adaptions are needed to fit the Weber 36 DCD on the K-intake. Sorry I can't be more specific, perhaps you will find more qualified responses on the UK Volvo Club's message board.
