I just did this job last week. To tell you the truth the return line was the least of my problems. What I did was position the hose so it was going to the right around the other hose connections and up thru the access hole. With the hose positioned like this if you pull up on the assembly and twist it, it should all flip around with the hose above the access cover. Its kinda hard to describe really. But I do not believe that there is any kind of metal tubing in the line, just the small black tubing and the big rubber sheath, so you shouldn't be too scared to make it do what you want.
