OK, get the alcoholic to do the steering rack and then have a front end shop do an alignment and check it over. No big deal.

What IS up with your transmission? If you need a "Rebuild", to hell with that. Try used ones. $200 and up. No more than $500 or find another one. Besides, the $500 one will be super low miles and in good condition. And you can get some shop to install it for $200. Just keep looking.
