Although I have not owned an M47 (just M46s), they are preceded by their puny reputation. It is recommended to overfill the M46 by jacking the car up as high as you can on the driver's side. The M46 is the same case, but it is the fill hole is about 1.5 inches higher and it holds more fluid. I would spend the money for the synthetic (and buy three quarts and use as much as you can) to prolong the life of the M47.
