A 1/4 qt as indicated by the dipstick could be checking technique. Same engine temp, same drain back time, etc. Also, what kind of oil? Some oils will loose a chunk of volume in hot driving conditions due to volatility. And lastly you could be burning some and the catalyst is finishing the combustion, hence the smoke.

I would consistently monitor it over the few weeks....
