Hole tapping question

Pull another bolt and check it. It is probably 6mm (normal for 10mm
head).
If you are trying to redo the original threads you should go with 6mm.
If you are trying to put in new threads you should probably go to 8mm.

1/4" is not enough bigger than 6mm to do much good with new threads.
If you insist on 1/4" use 1/4-28 (UNF) because the threads don't have
to be so deep to get some strength.
