tight mechanical valves don't knock! 700

the valves were way out of spec at 169,000 when i bought it....when i did the valve job, the silence seals, lifters, and cam were new..and this car had the origional oil cooled turbo up untill it started to leak exaust out of the wastegate housing at 185,000...there was NO piston play when i had the head off, so i dont think its piston slap, espically since the sound is completly random. any more suggestions?? im stumped
