BROKEN SPARK PLUG

This has floored me 940 miss firing now and then. Wife sends car to Volvo dealer and they diagnose split plug in no1 cylinder and split ht lead. They try to remove plug and it breaks! The only part of the plug still remaining is the body that the thread is on. The center of the plug is gone so has the hexagon spanner surface. What we have is a plug body (now looks like a bush)whose upper surface is flush with the steel threaded insert.
The head is aluminum and the plug insert is steel. The plug body is steel. Too much force on the plug body is likely to loosen the plug insert as I presume the insert is an interference fit in the aluminum head. Bring back cast iron I say!!!

They say they need to remove head to get plug out!! Cost £1300
Anyone with advice?
