It does now. Running the engine w/o battery connected is tough on alternators. A simple way to see if the alternator is doing anything is to check the battery voltage with engine off. Start the engine and if the charging system is working at all you should see the voltage increase by about 1.5 volts. If you have an amp meter, you can connect it inline at the alternator output (the cable to the starter motor). Turn on the highbeams and heater motor to load the system (don't do this by grounding any wires) and measure the output. If you are over 25 amps on this test I'd think the problem is not the alternator.
