B20 breather setup 120-130 1967

My 63 1800 has a breather tube which simply points towards the ground whith no filter or the like. this was a little smoky a idle so i rigged up a tube so that the fumes would be emited at the back, like a second exhaust pipe. Is there some reason other than enviornmental that the fumes should be introduced into the engine?
