Leaking heater core - need some help 200 1983

Hello all. I have a 244 "GL" wagon and I'm pretty sure the heater core has developed a leak. It steams up the windows even if I have the heat completely shut off, and there's antifreeze leaking onto the floor from the center console. So, I found out it's a $1200 repair, and I just can't swing that. Any alternatives? Is it a possible do-it-yourself repair, just time consuming? Any special tools? How about cooling system leak sealants? I remember using something years ago for pinhole leaks in radiators. Does that stuff wreck the cooling system or could it buy me some time until I can afford the repair? Thanks for your help!
