Overdrive relay (m46) 200 1982

Last night I got under my 242 out of boredom and decided to force the overdrive system to function.

First I ran 12 volts from the battery to the OD Solenoid.. Click. It worked.. so Then I traced my faults back to either the 4th gear indicator switch, or the OD relay.

I pulled the relay to look at it and removed the cover.. Nothing looks fried, but there is an IC in there, so who knows..

Having no other relay around, I decided to rig up something drastic (for testing purposes only ;)

I ran a wire from the positive side of the battery to the rear defrost switch, and then a wire right to the solenoid.

It was pretty cool.. get into 4th gear and then hit the rear defog switch and boom.. you were in 5th gear.

So I cruised down the highway to my friend's house and he asked me if I wanted to try a relay he had laying around.. Well, it turned out my relay was bad after all.

My question now is how can you test for a faulty relay??

The solder and connections on mine look like new.

is there anyway to hook it to a meter or apply voltage to check to see if it works?

(I now have working Overdrive (when the stupid 4th gear switch works))
