>How does the 398 head rate for use on a NA motor?
The 398/BCP was used as oem (and hence rates as a 160/BCP or the newer 530/SCP casting) on all NA emgines except the B23E up to 1983 (B23E 1979-1983 ran the 405/BCP) in the later/last years on the two-digit engines (i.e. the Bxx) and was replaced by the preferable 530/SCP (or 531/SCP) in 1985- i.e. with the entry of the three-digit engines (i.e. the B200/B230/B250).
It was mainly a BCP designs but I believe there was same late trial SCP version in the late 1984, as well.
If it were my engine I'd change to a SCP head, even with-in a oem set-up.
NB: It is possible to INDEED enhance the perfomance of the smaller heads (and obviously also the "bigger" 531 heads) via a modification of the SCP 530/531's both for NA as well as boost use accompanied with modern & purposemade high lift cams.
I have a file on this matter; just send me a mail and ask for it.
Best regards
