Yes, what MittenHed said.

I had this happen to my '82 244. If you run the car with the starter engaged, you'll strip the gear on the starter. I replaced it, same problem. Replaced the wiring harness, problem disappeared. My harness was shot, but if I remember correctly, your '88 shouldn't have that problem. I'd check that anyways.

Could it be a problem with the ignition switch???
