Avoid driving while this is going on. It can cause needless damage.

Pull the starter off and see if the drive gear is stuck in the engage position. You may be able to free it up as a band-aid, or it may be rebuild time. If it is origional a clean and lube could be in order. Check the bearings etc.

Trade it in and bolt on one someone else has rebuilt. The options are many, but do not run the car if the starter does not disengage.
