Apart form the pipe going in from the rear, there is also a connection and seal on the top connecting to the head. When I renewed a pump last I also renewed the head and I made sure the pump was placed first and in line with the block before I replaced the head. This ensured a proper pressure and seal on the top seal of the pump.

I guess if you just install a pump you must make sure there is sufficient upward pressure to get a tight seal on top of the pump, before you secure the nuts of the pump.
