Alternator swap 900 1992

Alternator on my 1992 940T appears to be dead. It's model 0 123 500 005, 14V, 55-100A. I happen to have a spare alternator from 1986 740T, model 0 120 469 668, 14V 31-70A. Looks the same size and fit. Will it work?
