Most of the time I've seen a sticker stating the date and mileage the belt was changed attached on or near the timing belt cover. Any reputable mechanic should do similar.
Whirring or whining noises sound like a tranny issue to me. Definitely check fluid level first. Try and locate the sound with a stethoscope or hose in your ear. Have you checked for the noise in the other gears?
Did you notice what color the smoke was?
Also check for noise where the timing belt rotates. Is the idle smooth? Don't know these 16v engines but I'd try taking the timing belt cover off and check the condition of the belt and the tensioner if you can access that. If you have any doubt about their condition get them changed ASAP. If they break so will the upper end of your engine.
