I realized I had not posted back after I found the solution for the puffs of smoke out the back of the '90 740 GLE.
It was the valve cover gasket all along...correcting the issue, but not quite in the way thought.
It was leaking oil at the rear of the head, and the oil would apparently puddle on the small flat plate that set on top of the two exhaust pipes. The hot exhaust resulted in a puff of smoke out the back going down the interstate... some small puffs to others quite noticable.
As far as I can tell, it was never coming out of the exhaust. It has now been fixed for a few weeks... no more smell, no puffs of smoke.
Again... thanks for all the input and help! 🙌
The whine turned out to be a non issue.
