try taking the carpet out ... for rust underneath ...

For my 850s, 240s, 220, taking the carpet out is a breeze. I use the bath tub to wash and rinse. Simple green for the oil stains and other hardened dirt, a brush to get down to the bottom of the fibers, warm water for the wash, and a good long rinse with cold water. Leave in the garage to dry, takes 2 days or so depending on humidity levels.

Unfortunately, the 850 has a rubber/butyl pad under the carpet, with foam insulation under that, which cannot be removed. I suspect that is the same for BMW and MB, and I have no inclination to remove trim to find out. Yes, there was a lot of salt, to the point where the carpet fibers couldn't be seen (BMW). The visible salt is now gone.
