I did not try impact. The location and the angle did not make that an option.
The setup was on the car when I purchased it in 1996. I do not see any "plug" that might accept an O2 sensor on the down pipe; which means I would need to replace down pipe and cat to get a sensor in the system.
The idea of replacing the down pipe and the cat adds even more determination at trying to get by with drilling and tapping what I've got. Of course getting the down pipe disconnected from the manifold is another task to deal with- it has been in place for a very long time as well.
The car is officially classified as "back up" on the roster so I do have time on my side.
EDIT: a quick check on FCP site indicates that down pipes as well as converters for this car are available both with and without sensor openings (BTW this car is not equipped with EGR).
