My Volvo is a '92. The trim is located just below the door handles. This trim is approximately 1-1/8" wide or 28mm. The trim is all black with no visible chrome.

Based upon the responses from my original post, I called back to the dealership. They still have the trim clips that I had ordered then rejected. I told them that I wanted to reopen that order. When these clips reach me through the mail, I'll try them out and let you know. I think these new ones (1372059) were meant to attach to the trim by twisting the clip 90 degrees in the metal track. Each clip has what appears to be a rubber washer around the neck of the "bullet" that is inserted in the door body hole. That's also different from the original trim clip.

Perhaps Volvo has changed the plastic from the original, and thus the color from white to gray. The older clips may seem to weaken with age and are likely easier to fail when they become more brittle.
