So you have one fat wire from the alternator B+ to the big stud on the starter with the battery + there is a 2nd fat red wire running away to feed the car? (Or it could be on the alternator too).

Does the alternator light work OK?

Also, have a good look at the connection on the alternator, the D+ is pretty close to diodes where it connects.
