"Earth straps" would be grounding straps, like the small braided cable between the firewall and a cam cover acorn nut (on the 240 anyway).

Perhaps the tranny bellhousing is just stuck fast to the engine. A couple of good hits with a mallet should loosen up the bond between the flat surfaces and locating dowels. Naturally you'll make sure the assembly is set down and all tension is off the load chain of the hoist before doing any such thing.
