It was suggested that I used this site to post a question (from the Car Talk site). I have my mother's original 1984 Volvo 240 DL Sedan which has 74K original miles and is in great condition. We leant it to a friend who was visiting our little island (no Volvo mechanics here) and he washed, waxed it and the PRESSURE WASHED the engine!!! Since then it starts right up, we can drive it down the driveway (1/4 mile) or to our friends house (1 mile) turn it off and then it will not start. It does not crank over, it is just dead. If you leave it overnight it will start right up and then when you turn it off it is dead again. I am afraid by pressure washing the engine he forced water up into something electrical. My husband replaced the distributor cap, rotor, air cleaner filter and oxygen sensor unit to no avail. Still has the problem. He is away for a family funeral until the 20th and I decided to start trying to seek help on line as we don't know exactly where to go from here. Don't know if the 1984 had "black boxes". It is the weekend and I will try locating a mechanic on the mainland on Monday. Any suggestions? Thanks so much. I love my old Volvo and she's in very good condition. Patty
