1984 has a Bosch LH 2.0 management system which was only used in 83 and 84 if the engine wiring harness hasn't been changed it will need to be, or occasionally patched. Because of the problems the harnesses are very pricy from Volvo. Ebay will probably be your best bet.
The next time it is in a crank but no start mode, for the heck of it you should disconnect the cable going to the air mass meter which will make the brain go into "limp mode" (factory default settings).
The air mass meter (amm) is about 3 inches diameter by about 4 inches long and is inlne of your air intake hose, it is located on the driver's side inner fender right below the strut tower. The cable connector has a wire clip that you push in in order to unplug it.
