Aric,
In short, I don't know how universal these are, I've picked 'em up on eBay for about $5.00. They are dog simple.

I have seen precisely the same behavior you describe by putting a plug or a vacuum gauge on my balance tube intake fitting. It just runs better.

If that fixes your problems, you could install a road-tube instead of the oil breather trap until you can figure out what, if anything, is wrong with your flame trap.
