1979 244 fuel problems...need help 200 1979

So here it goes. Girlfriend went into store, volvo ran perfectly. Comes out, cranks but no start. I check things, no fuel. Jumping the fuse panel gets me the main pump running but not the in-tank pump.

Replaced Relay, still nothing, pumps wont turn on with the key on.

So what ive come to find is....

Via jumping the fuse I can get the main pump working, but not the in-tank pump, neither work just by turning the key. When the main pump is whirring away (loudly I may add) I can fire up the car and it runs perfectly, but still no noise from the in-tank pump.

Pulled in tank-pump, found the sock was black as the night, and had a big ol hole in the sock (looked shredded) right next to the inlet.

So, where should I check things to see if power is actually getting to the in-tank pump? Does it have its own wires or does it go through the external pump?

Where is the external pump? Next to gas tank or towards the front?

Is it possible that the shredded sock got sucked into the pump and ruined it? But wouldnt that prevent the main pump from drawing out gas as well?

Any way I can hook power directly to the in tank pump (which is now out) and see if it works that way? Or that a bad idea?

Any ideas? Anyone?

Thanks
