Further developments

Took the t-stat out. Filled it back with water. Cranked car. Watched for pressure to build in top hose. Did not seem to have much. Removed cap. Excess water boiled out (had put a bit too much in) not hot.

Then I thought to rev the engine up a bit with the cap off. After a second or so it was like Yellowstone ...up the water came, pretty forceful ..out of the reservoir.

May still need to get the tests, but this may a pretty strong indicator of a bad gasket. Also there is a slight trace of oily film in the water within the reservoir.
