Shifter Issues

I have a 1997 964 automatic transmission, I cannot get my car in to gear. The car will start just fine and I can move the shifter thru all the gears it just won't lock in to any it acts as if were in park. I had slammed on the brakes about 1/2 hour before this happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
