Looks like you've got a couple of choices: 1) Replace the cable and see what happens or 2) Drop the tranny and check it out. If you've got the original clutch with that mileage I'd bet it's pretty worn and needs replacement. You may be able to lube things you a bet and get it working better. I had an M47 also and never liked the feel of the cable setup. The cable sliding movement tranferred through the pedel and I could feel it with my foot. Just a personal thing I guess but it wasn't comfortable to me. I prefer the M46 hydraulic operation alot better.
