almost no clutch cable adjustment left, plus hard pedal 700 1987

Hi all:

the clutch on my 87 740 wagon 4-speed has always been stiff in the 5 years I've had the car -- pedal harder than typical to push down. Even after the cable broke and was replaced, it was still hard to push down, but otherwise quite functional. It has never slipped, chattered, or made any strange noises (now has 192K on presumably orig. clutch). The problem is that the cable is now adjusted out to the last in order to get (barely) adequate disengagement. I'm not sure what's going on, but I know the problem is not the cable or associated parts, because I changed it twice, just to be sure. Could it be a badly worn friction disk? Or pressure plate or throw-out bearing ? Or all 3 of them ?? However, I would expect slippage, chattering, noise or something like that if it was one of these problems. And if it was, why would this cause a hard pedal?

I hate to take out the gearbox and replace a clutch that's not slipping. Maybe there's some novel way someone out there has thought of to take up some slack in the cable, if this would indeed work ? I could easily live with the hard pedal as long as the clutch would work ok for a while longer. Anyone run into this before?? Thanks again for all the help.
