Water pump design for the red blocks - commentary

The B18 and B20 have a very similar setup, with two O rings between the water pump and the head, and a tube to the rear of the motor for the heater hose, therefore this design goes back to at least 1962. I don't recall what the B16 used.

In any case, it's a lot better design than Honda, where the water pump is the timing belt tensioner, and is located right next to the strut tower, as it is a transverse engine.

For ease of maintenance and repair, I'll take a red-block Volvo over any domestic V6. You can see and get to just about everything with no difficulty, at least on a 740. 240s are a little more crowded in the engine bay, but still better than most.
