Phil-
Congrats on your latest find. Sounds like a keeper. I was noticing today, driving the 87 around WITHOUT having to hold the shifter up... that the shifter moves side to side a lot. Like it's got more play in it than the width of 1st-to-5th gears. Couldn't tell before I fixed the shifter ball. That's the next step I guess- I think it will turn out to be a bushing up forward at the front end of the linkage- that looks a little harder to get at but if it's fixable I'll do it. I'll let you know what I find.
As for the SRS light, the common problem I know of is the crash sensor or power supply under the front seat. That's what has to do a self test and issue a +12V signal to the instrument panel to shut off the light. Prognosis for fixing the module is poor. I don't know anyone who's fixed one, and they're still new enough that most junk cars are ones that got crashed- so the module is no good. The unit does need good connections and a good ground on the floor, and they can get wet if there's water intrusion- pull the carpets and look for corrosion.
One other weird weird problem I saw with an SRS light, in a 93 245, involved mice. Tried everything to get the SRS light to go off- new airbag, module, etc. Still nothing. New cluster, nothing. Turned out mice chewed up the wiring harness going under the LF strut tower, and split the wire that fed it. How strange is that? I couldn't say if that's your trouble. As for codes, there is an SRS plug in the dash, where it says "SRS equipped" or something in the center console- where the defrost switch is. I don't have the procedure, and thankfully haven't had to learn it- the $500 1991 I have, didn't have the SRS light on!
