How to reset radio code 200 1993

Currently the radio on my Volvo 240 displays 'EEE'.I have obtained the code for the radio from the volvo dealer. I try to enter the code that was given but it will not take. When I press the number keys the 'EEE' does not change at all. Am I doing something wrong? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
