overdrive

a few years ago the fourth gear switch for the over drive shorted out. this, in turn, ruined the solenoid and relay and the wires in between. after this happened, i replaced the damaged components and wires except for the fourth gear switch (which i bypassed)

my question is, when i am on the freeway and have to downshift, is it okay for me to leave the OD on and shift to 3rd? Or, should i turn the overdrive off instead?

i am aware that they put he switch there for a reason. and, for this, part of me says "this is a bad idea". however, another part of me says, "the drivetrain keeps the transmission turning, the engine never dips below 2500 rpm, and the only friction point is the clutch. so no big deal."

any suggestion?
