Although the OD can function within its parameters in third gear and as low as 2000 RPM trans output shaft speed, it is not recommneded to permanently disable the 4th gear switch.
If it is forgotten to "turn off" the OD, and reverse is used, the potential for major internal OD damage increases exponentially with reverse speed.
IF a situation occurs where the "cone clutch" is lifted from the bell in reverse, the planetary gears will then attempt to spin the bell faster than the output shaft of the trans which cannot occur in reverse because of the Sprague clutch which drives in gears 1 through 4. A jamming occurs which then sheers the center of the cone clutch away from the brake ring along its outer circumfrence. Damage also usually includes the planetary gear set which is no longer available as an individual part.
