Decrease in mileage during cold weather - why? 700 1989

I have an '89 740 five-speed, and during periods of colder weather (below 30 degrees F.) the average mileage has dropped by approx. two to three mpg. With the warmer weather in the last several days, it has returned to more its usual average (commuting - approx. 29/30 mpg.) Any thoughts as to why?
