metallic click from rear end when brakes first appied 200 1986

It occurs when I first apply the brakes, just as braking action begins. This noise has been troubling me for a while now. The noise is external to the cabin - I hear it more with the windows down. The major bushings have been replaced with polyurethane (rear trailing arm and torque rod) the others checked and appear to be in good shape. Also the shocks are less than a year old (KYB). Maybe I have a sticky caliper? However, I haven't noticed any trouble with the braking - no noticeable pull. In addition I often have a firm knock on take-off - the bushing replacements have firmed up the rear end but haven't eliminated this noise. I have not replaced any of the u-joints, but I've hand tested them with the driveshaft removed and there isn't noticeable slop. Anybody have similar experiences? Suggestions?
Thanks for your help,
Tom

    solution... brake hardware 200 1986

The main offending sound has been silenced by re-installing the brake pad hardware. It turns out that when I installed new rear brake pads a while back, I didn't knock the pins all the way in (can you blame me? - it's not an easy access job) and they were free to shift a little bit and produce a surprisingly audible click when the brakes were forst engaged. So now the hardware is cleaned up and relubed and the pins are seated and not shifting and the brake noise is gone.
The other noise, the occasional knock during takeoff remains - I'm still tracking that one. Seems like it might not be from under the car, but may be tailgate related? We'll see...
    Thanks for the great help,
    Tom

    Hello Tom:

Are you dead sure your torque rod bushings are good?

I had this happen several months after having the torque rod bushings replaced on my '92 245. It turns out that the guy who put them in for me installed them incorrectly. These were FEBI Bilstein rubber torque rod bushings, and this guy installed them with the rubber segments 90 deg off.

I just bought the poly ones from FCPgroton.com and I am going to try again.

Another thought-- how are your motor/tranny mounts? Clearly you have some issues with differential transfer of mass under both positive and negative acceleration...

Let us know what fixes things for you...

      Thanks for the response Herb.
I agree that the noise on takeoff seems to point toward bushings as a likely culprit and indeed I hoped it would be eliminated when I replaced the likely suspects - the torque rod and rear trailing arm bushings. Both replaced with polyurethane from FCPGroton. Unfortunately, this hasn't cured that noise. The ride improved with the new bushings, but the noises are still there. I've spent a lot of time under there retorquing things and knocking on stuff with a mallet and I just can't find anything still loose in the suspension. In addition, I did replace the transmission mount recently - it had turned to mush - but that didn't eliminate the noise. If it isn't suspension components, I tend to think that it is brake or drivetrain related. I'm just trying to get some suggestions on what to look for when I get back under there.

      Tom

No offense intended - I expect you've already ruled this out - but are you sure the rear wheels are sufficiently tight? That's caused mystery clunks for more than a few people, as the rotor & wheel moved slightly against the studs on takeoff & braking. The worst of it is how obvious it seems once you find it... Also may be 2 unrelated problems, such as loose pad mounting hardware causing the click upon braking, & sticking handbrake causing clunk pulling away from a stop.
    Good luck!
    -Chris

No offense taken - I am by no means above overlooking things like lugnuts. But I have insured their tightness on this occasion and I have ruled out the handbrake (I believe) by not using it and still observing the clunk. Surely the brake hardware is something to look at - it appeared in good order 2 summers ago when I replaced the pads and bled the rears, but something could have snapped - or I could have installed something backwards, etc.
      Thanks for your help,
      Tom

IF IT'S A METALLIC CLICK TYPE SOUND,CHECK THE SIDEWAYS MOVEMENT OF THE PADS IN THE CALIPERS,THE EDGES CAN SOMETIMES WEAR AND GIVE THIS NOISE.

If this is the case, how do I fix it? The blue sticky silicone goop to stick the pad to the piston? - this, as opposed to the silicone lube and teflon coated shims I currently have in there on pbr pads (no relation to pabst blue ribbon beer that I know of).
          Thanks,
          Tom

Make sure you use genuine volvo pads, they fit better than after market ones.Dab some silicone grease onto side of pad and yes by all means add some goop to backs if you want.
