For Sale: 1986+ E-Codes for 240 200

Hello all,

You may recall my post earlier in regards to the headlights I scored on ebay for my 1990 240. You may also recall my distress with my father in installing them. I've decided that my family relationships are more important than headlights, so they're for sale!

Background on these: they were purchased from a retired RAF officer in the UK. He bought his Volvo new in 1988 in Sweden, and these lights were installed on his car for the drive back through the continent to the UK. A set of UK-spec (RHD) lights were included in the trunk for installation upon arrival to the UK. According to him, these lights were installed on the car for 1-2 weeks, and were in storage in his attic ever since. Other than a bit of dust, they look it.

All trim is included (chrome - a bit of metal polish and the chrome would be spotless), and all lenses are in pristine, like-new condition. All original bulbs are included(!), except for the white side marker bulbs, which I removed and replaced with amber bulbs, so the side markers would glow orange and not be strange to a North American driver. The european lenses for the side markers remain, however, and you could easily go back to "true" european spec by going to Walmart and buying the non-amber equivalent bulb.

I really, REALLY hate to let these go, but my relationship with my family takes priority over these lights. Regretfully, I have no pictures (no dig. camera), but I can assure you they are in as good of condition that used Euro lights will ever be. I would be almost more inclined to call them "New, Old Stock".

All that said, I am selling them for what I paid for them, $350 plus shipping, which I don't anticipate will be very much if sent by UPS or Fedex Ground. If I don't get any takers on this board, I plan to put them on Ebay, so now's your chance!

Ciao,
Brian

Does it include absolutely ALL the parts to install in a North America car? 200

I think that sounds a little arrogant, but that is the one area that worries me more than enough to make be back off the idea.

I don't know what-all parts must be changed out, so I would be at a real loss if I discovered that some parts were missing.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
I obviously haven't seen these particular lamps, but the Euro lamps come as one unit. Or to be more precise, one side consists of one headlamp and one corner lamp connected to the headlamp. If they are complete with trim and all, there should be no loose parts to worry about. The one thing that's unclear to me, is if it's just plug-and-play; if the E-lamp's grey connector plugs into the US car's counterpart with all functions intact.
The original Euro set-up includes a wiper/washer system though.
Oh, one thing: Euro lamps from 1981 and up will fit US cars 1986 and up. But because of the new grille in 1986, 1986-93 lamps got a thin rubber "lip" to seal the gap between lamp and grill. The 1981-85 E-lamps lack this detail.

To answer both your questions... these particular Euro lights do NOT come with wipers. This was apparently an option on euro models. One could, however, add the wiper facility fairly easily by purchasing the appropriate used parts from a junkyard overseas, though the extra wiring and piping complications involved made it not worth the effort to me.

The lights do come as an assembly. They originally came off of a 1988 240, so they not only have the chrome upper trim, they also have the black plastic filler piece as described by Erling.

For installation, the units are a direct bolt-in. The turn signal plug matches right up, the only modification you'll need to make is for the headlight bulb connector itself.

You'll need to clip off the plugs currently in your car and install new headlight pigtails appropriate to H4 bulbs (which use the same connector as old sealed-beams, just in a different wiring configuration), or you can use standard crimp-on spade terminals of the blue variety, available at any hardware store. I've marked on one of the lights where each wire on the Volvo harness goes to which terminal on the H4 bulb, so no worries there!

Sorry for the confusion. They most definitely ARE LHD lights. The markings on the lenses, as per Daniel Stern's website, confirm this.

The car, when he purchased it, came in RHD for the UK market, but since it is illegal to drive in continental europe with lights intended for RHD markets (technically... I'm sure people do it!) Volvo provided the gentleman a set of RHD-market lights in the trunk, and LHD lights installed for the drive back to the UK from Sweden. These are those lights, the LHD lights that were installed in Sweden when he took delivery.

Sorry for the confusion, if you or anyone else has any other questions please ask!
