Rebuilding AW70 Tranny 200

My shifts are getting kinda longer and not as nice as I am used to. I have seen AW70 rebuilding kits that give you the plates and stuff for like 150 bucks, and was wondering how hard it is to do teh rebuild yourself, and what tools are needed for the job.

On the other hand, how much does it cost to have the transmission rebuilt by a quality shop? What are some good shops, and what was the life of the tranny like after the rebuild?

Go to car-parts.com type in the tranny you want and wait for the responses. All prices some include shipping and warranties on their parts. Just a thought. Then if you want you spend time rebuilding your own. Buy a video on rebuilding trannys, same principles apply even if the video is not for your car[chevy tranny?].Lots and lots of little parts. You have to really take your time. Can't stress enough LOTS AND LOTS OF LITTLE PARTS!Good luck!

    Kevin,

I struggled with the same decision last year on an AW71. After going to one of the better tranny shops in town he told me exactly what was wrong with it after I described the symptoms and said, "We used to rebuid a lot of these, and Toyota had a similar transmission..." The operative phrase was "Used to...", he said they didn't mess with them any more and if I found somebody who would rebuild it to plan on about $1200.

I thought about a used one and figured I'd probably wind up with one that wasn't much better than the one I had so I put in an M46.

    Good luck...

Well, looking at the list of vehicles you have in your driveway is it safe to assume you wouldn't miss this one if it was out of commission for a while? ;-)

I toyed with the idea of rebuilding my AW71 myself as it seems like I found a rebuild kit for not much over $100. Instead, I "fell into" a deal (like, free!) on all the parts to convert to the M46 so being the cheapskate I am... As Paul Harvey says, "Now you know the rest of the story."

A friend of mine (who is an ASE wrench and owns his own shop) told me the most important thing when working on/rebuilding an automatic transmission is clean, clean, clean... I suppose if you pulled the tranny, took it down to the car wash and cleaned the exterior real good and had a real clean area to disassemble/assemble it on you might have a good chance of succeeding. If not, you're not much further behind than you when you started!

I have seen the factory Volvo manuals for these on "that auction site" lately so you might want to watch there and snag one if you decide to rebuild it.

        Good luck,

        Justin B.

Trans shops that can rebuild well aren't that common. There are some around, but most of them buy already-rebuilt transmissions and install them in your car. Furthermore, in the area you're in, the trans shops are better informed about the more garden variety cars, not VOlvos. They'll "rebuild" your trans, but how well will they do it?

If you want a better bet, buy a used, low(er) mileage AW70 and put it in. Don't buy a used alread-rebuilt trans though.

Or maybe buy two. They're super cheap, and they're readily available.

It's like rebuilding an engine; it can be done so that it is better than ever. But it is more likely to be done so that it is only better than it was before it was rebuilt.

You know where to shop for the parts. It's just a matter of getting the part installed into the car.

This is just my opinion; I'd never bother with a rebuilt AW trans since they are so readily available for a fraction of the price. And a whole unit, for the price of a rebuild kit.

well... then should i just buy a AW71 transmission then? Would it give me stronger shifts? What places are good in the SE WI (Milwaukee) area for buying a used low-mile aw70 or aw71 tranny?

I can't make the best choice for you or your car; I'm just relaying information that might be helpful in making a decision. It could be that you'd be better off rebuilding yourself.

I don't mean to come off as arrogant, if I did. But I've seen the aftermath of rebuilds that just plain suck. Someone like a private owner who has skills (It doesn't matter if you're going to art shcool

actually, if you were motivated and got a decently priced AW trans, you could rebuild the one you've got while you drive around with another one in there.

Or whatever. There are a lot of options. You'll figure out what's best for you. I don't mean to come off as shoving you in one direction.
